Auckland 1000 30 August 2009

31st August 2009

Race report from Ben Evans

The Auckland 1000 presented a challenging race with strong winds and squally showers. I elected to ride B Grade with most of the Masters riders in preparation for the upcoming Club Nationals. The race was 3 laps, 78km, with plenty of crosswinds and headwind. I spent most of the first 2 laps in breakaways, however the bunch was working well and did not want to give anyone much length. 2km from the finish on the final downhill corner the first 2 riders overcooked and went down. 3rd wheel managed to swerve and stay on the road. In 4th wheel I had no room to get round the corner and so went on a cyclocross adventure down a steep rocky bank coming to a stop on the edge of a grassy paddock along with a couple of other riders. Not getting enough traction or speed I managed to ride half way up the bank, then scrambled back onto the road. First mission was catching the bunch on the final climb. Second was finding position for the sprint in head/crosswinds, and so I was pleased to come away with a podium finish (3rd).

Great effort Ben grin .
