AvantiPlus riders cleanup local Hell of the North Race

In strong Nor’wester but fine conditions, AvantiPlus riders won both the short and long options for the reconfigured Hell of the North Race.

Starting and finishing from Tutukaka instead of Onerahi, the hilly race headed along the coast to Sandy Bay, inland to Hikurangi and then to Tikipunga via Vinegar Hill. The short course (70km) headed straight back out to the coast, the long course (129km) taking in a loop of Mt Tiger, Parua Bay, Pataua South to North and then to Tutukaka via Harris Road.

Elliot Frizelle outsprinted another local, Daryn Johnson on the tough Tutukaka Hill finish, after being in a lead group of 3 riders from early on .

Ben Evans soloed the last 30km to the finish to win the long course by 6 minutes, after dropping two other break companions on the Pataua North Road climbs. Local triathlete Lee Greer did well to finish 3rd after spending most of the day between the two lead groups.

The race was well supported by riders from Auckland and further afield (including a Swiss Pro Mountain biker in lead long course break).
