Avanti Veterans do it again !!!!
Saturday 9th of August seemed like any other day, but not for our two Avanti Plus Whangarei riders Paul Fancy and Kevin Mackenzie who turned up and decimated the field in the open men’s category at the latest Parahaki MTB club race held at Glenbervie Forest.This event was billed as the “clash of all clashes” between DJ Gillming and the Avanti Plus rider Tracey Fancy but this was overshadowed by the sheer speed and skillful riding done by the two veterans of the field. A path of endless destruction was left in there wake as younger riders struggled to cope with there team tactics. Matt Andrew of My Bike was the only rider able to go with the two experienced riders. “The plan was to send Kevin up the road first and set a pace that others would find hard to handle and I would follow and sweep them up as they all imploded under the shear pressure of the pace”, Team manager and rider Paul Fancy explained. Kevin lead after the first lap but young Matt Andrew soon put the hammer down and pulled away from the aging veteran. Matt went on to win the single speed race and the crown of Northlands top single speeder and he will hold that title for a year. Mackenzie and Fancy went on to claim 1st and 2nd in the open men’s class while DJ took the points in the woman’s race and now seems to now have an unassailable lead in that category. Her nearest rival was Linda Going of the famed Harley Going who was not able to attend the event due to a “school ball” of all things!!!!!.
Whangarei Boys and Girls High Schools took there teams there for some training and they both cleaned up the junior fields with some out standing skills on tracks “slipperier than a jellied eel !!” one exclaimed. The teachers thought this would be good training for Tuesdays annual “Get to Go Challenge”. The students had other thoughts and the looks on there faces told a different story!.
The Club will be hosting the next round at Barge Park on the 20th August , where the Avanti Plus Whangarei Team will be hoping to dominate once more.
