Bruce Kent Open handicap road race - 74km. Report.

The handicap race was well attended in very windy conditions.
The scratch bunch (which I started with) was 12 strong to begin with, and it was the first race in which the scratch riders had caught all riders, this year in Auckland.
This was probably due to the windy conditions in which the scratch bunch once whittled down to 7, and then 5 (many of the riders dropping out) the remaining group worked hard and fairly smoothly in paceline and strong echelon formation. Most riders were caught on the second of three laps and the break riders were caught fairly early into the 3rd lap. A larger bunch was formed, from which a breakaway of 2 scratch and one break rider formed. I missed the break initially and didn’t manage to bridge across, being left in limbo. Caught by the remaining scratch and break riders I bided my time until the last corner and time trialled away from the group, with the bunch sprint coming in closely behind me on the line.

4th overall and 3rd fastest time.
Average speed 39.0kmh 70km.
