Subway Rider Wins Fred Ogle Ride !!!
Sunday 14th Nov saw the third running of the Fred Ogle Ride.
Approximately 180 riders from Auckland to Kaitaia entered the three different events with the majority opting for the longer 110km.
The day dawned clear, windless and warm as the riders headed out but as expected with spring weather the wind soon picked up.
The race started out at a fairly quick pace and it didn’t take long for local rider Lee Johnstone and Subway Avanti Pro Team Rider Nick Lovegrove to pull away from the field. The pair stayed away from the peleton and on the way back up Rushbrook Road, Lovegrove applied pressure but Johnstone was unable to respond and by the time Lovegrove reached the top he was on his own and continued to extend his lead into the wind for the next 45km.He eventually +crossed the line in 2 hours 53. Meanwhile Johnstone was working hard to stay away from the peleton and finished alone, 4 minutes behind Lovegrove. there was a sprint finish from the peleton and Auckland Rider Sam Horn just pipped up and coming junior Matthew Markby for third place.
In the, Lynley Macdonald ladies race, last years winner Chubby Hale again proved too strong winning in 3 hours 5 mins 55 sec. It could have been different for Hale who punctured with about 30km still to ride but for Keven Mackenzie who generously gave her his wheel and sacrificed his own race. Good on ya mate!!
Meanwhile in the 50km race “Star of the Future” Ben Johnstone powered away easily winning 3 minutes ahead of William Arnold and Brian Bedford in third place. Alice Riddell was first junior women in fifth place, with a time of 1.47.44.
In the 25km race David Owens won easliy with a time of 57 min 39 sec.
Thanks to all who participated and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
