Going Once Going Twice

Whangarei Boys High schools Harley Going won the Northland Secondary Schools mountain bike championship held on Mount Parihaka for a second year running in both the cross country and downhill events.

The cross-country race was easily won by Going but he did not have it so easy in the downhill race with Kerikeri high schools Aiden Moyle narrowly missing out by .25 of a second . Going was pushed all the way on a fast technical track where being smooth and consistent was the key to a quick time. In the junior boys cross country Tauraroa Area Schools Daniel Jepson stormed to a convincing victory and in the downhill Michael Lea won for the second year running showing some fast and exciting form.

The girls division had more competitors this year with different winners in the senior and junior sections. In the cross-country race Kerikeri high school won both races with Olivia Wadman and Rachel Martin to strong for the other girls, however in the downhill event they both had to settle for second place as Tauraroa area schools Zia Pitkethley won the seniors and Whangarei Girl High schools Tayla Going won the juniors .

The event drew 32 competitors from all over Northland. Stu Bell from Bike Northland who coordinated the event was pleased with the turn out from the schools and would like to see more inter-school competitions during the year. A big thanks must go to the Parihaka mountain bike club and Regent Training Center who helped run the event on the day, also Avanti Plus Whangarei who donated prizes for the race.
