Marsden Wheeler Results 22nd August

24th August 2009

Kia ora everyone

We continued our “criterium” theme for the last ride of the current junior coaching series. This series has focused on specific skills for the New Zealand Secondary School Champs in Auckland in two weekends time and 6 Marsden Wheelers Juniors are riding in this event for their schools.

There was a short coaching session on “warm ups” and “recovery” and then we did a mass start race up and down Kara Road five times.

The field split into several groups early on with Ben E, Mathew Z and Timo in the first group, Tim, Dylan, Sam, Matthew M and Ben J in the next group with Steve and Kevin carrying the lantern rouge.  It was very impressive to see juniors who have only been cycling for several weeks lapping it out and giving far more experienced cyclists a run for their money.
Sadly there was a crash at the first turnaround.  Sam clipped a wheel and ended up with abrasions and bruises.
First on handicap was U19 rider Dylan followed by Matthew M who is U17.  Matthew M was the most improved rider and after following a training programme is now significantly faster than he was at the start of the coaching series.  Ben Evans got fastest time overall.

Thanks to Catherine for timekeeping and John for one of the turnarounds.

Results (sealed handicap 14.5km):

1.  Dylan U19 25:05 (5min)

2.  Matthew M U17 25:54 (5min)

3.  Timo U23 24:16 (2½min)
