Mangakahia-Kerehunga Loop circuit

A blustery head wind for the first leg down to Whatatiri Rd, everyone sticking together and trying to hide from the wind. The pace soon told on the climb up Whatatiri hill, with Doug & Graham being dropped, then Phil, as a group of 4 charged up the hill. Matthew Zenovich and Jonathan reaching the top, and Matthew Markby trying to bridge the gap which he did. Along the undulating top portion he was dropped again and so by Kerehunga corner it was Matthew Z and Jonathan a short gap back to Matthew M, then Sam and Ryan. Bob and Kevin unfortunately not able to bridge the gap to the youngsters in front, but going really well. Next to Phil, a short distance ahead of Doug and Graham. Newcomer Brad in his first race was doing really well, chasing the faster riders.

What a difference a lap can make!! By the 2nd lap the order had sorted itself out, Jonathan drifting back to a group of 3 others, and setting a good chase. Bob said goodbye to Kevin, who then drifted back to another group of 3 – Doug, Graham and Phil. Ruth turning into Kerehunga Rd with an ominous noise – no it wasn’t a cracked frame but a loose bidon carrier – I should had tightened those bolts! And deciding 2 laps was enough. Brad finished very well also for 2 laps.

The only surprise from another lap was Phil being dropped by Graham and Kevin – or should I say Phil dropping Graham and Kevin. Still it was a tough 3 laps so well done to everyone, and we hope the wind has dropped for the tour next week, especially for the first leg!!
