Success for Going

21st December 2010

2010 Eastern Express and final round of the Mid North Island Cup in Napier was a major success.

Last weekend on the 12th December I travelled to the Hawkes Bay with my family for a holiday and the chance to race the 2010 Eastern Express and final round of the Mid North Island Cup in Napier as a warm up to the National MTB Cup rounds and Nationals this summer. I thought there wouldn’t be a very large turnout for an event which seemed to be way in the woops, but to my surprise a wicked amount of our country’s best showed up including 8 time national champ Stuart Houltham, and last years under 17 champ Nigel McDowell making it the perfect chance for me to see where I am at for this summer.

Race day was so hot! Super sunny and dry, very dusty trails which were a heap of fun as the berms were full of powder! The coarse was good with only small sections of gravel roads, with steep climbs, which meant plenty of downhill. I started off really well, and to my surprise was sitting in third place overall behind Dirk Peters and Stuart Houltham. However it didn’t take long for slow starter McDowell to catch up in the third lap making me fight for first position. But on the last climb his steady pace took the win as he just kept on cruising on up and up leaving me to finish in second place for the under 19 men category.

Overall it was a fun and exciting race which was heaps of fun and gave me a good taste of what its like to be up there with the best, so I’m sure to put myself up there this season!!!
