National Secondary School MTB Champs

Great stuff Harley!!

Summer N- duro (13-March)

Me and Matt Andrews headed south on the 13 of march for the final round of the summer n-duro series. We had a mean as time. I had a great start third into the single track, and Matt wasn’t far behind. I was going really good for the first few km’s but then things went down hill as I hit the big climb up frontal lobotomy and wasn’t able to keep my pace just as Matt came around the corner. We rode together for the remaining km’s of the race with Ollie Shaw who sprinted me off at the line to take 7th place, leaving me in 8th and matt 9th (first in the single speed class). A little disappointed with my result, we still had a great weekend riding the awesome Rotorua trails.

National Secondary School Champs (26-27 March)

After a 9 hour drive we arrived in Levin for some practice laps of the XCO course in the sunny, warm weather. Track was mint, super technical with two steep climbs. That night it rained so hard! In the morning there were puddles every where and the course was so much different to practice. I had a mint start first into the single track, and was leading up the first trail when I slid off the track and was passed by Nigel McDowell. The track was so muddy that I ran 50% of the downhills and 50% of the up hills too and used most of my water trying to clean my drive to keep the chain going around. I finished up in 2nd place. Downhill practice in the afternoon was rad. The track was nice and tacky and with Brett’s mudds on was like riding in the dry. The next day started at 8.30 with the Hill Climb. My legs were aching from all the running in the XCO the day before. The race went well and came 3rd which was a good spot to be in as I was still in for a shot at taking the over all. All I needed was a good DH run. This did not go to plan. The track was again different to practice as like over 200 riders had been down the track before me it was like 1 big rut all the way to the bottom. I went through the tape 4 times and came through the finish 20 seconds behind Nigel who had a clean run taking out the overall and pushing me into 2nd. Not a bad way to wrap up the season! Thanks to dad for driving me all the way down and Brett for lending me his tyres and my sponsor AvantiPlusWhangarei!
